Fifteen years ago, Savile Row was transformed into a lush green pasture dotted with fifty grazing sheep. It was an unforgettable moment – the official launch of The Campaign for Wool, an initiative founded by His Majesty King Charles III (then HRH The Prince of Wales) in January 2010 to champion the natural, renewable qualities of wool and its importance across multiple industries.
This October, Savile Row once again celebrates its long-standing partnership with The Campaign for Wool with a free public exhibition and a series of exclusive wool-themed launches. From Monday, 13th October to Thursday, 31st October, the street’s celebrated tailors will unveil special window displays dedicated to wool craftsmanship, sustainability and innovation.
Throughout the three-week celebration, Savile Row’s renowned houses will come together to showcase the artistry and versatility of wool. From bespoke suits and luxurious cloths to innovative designs and reinterpretations of heritage patterns. Each tailor’s display will embody The Campaign for Wool’s message: “Check It’s Wool.”
As part of a global series of events, the campaign continues to encourage consumers to steer away from synthetic fabrics and to make mindful, sustainable choices by embracing wool, one of nature’s most remarkable and planet-friendly fibres.
One highlight of this year’s exhibition is Henry Poole & Co’s introduction of The Lonsdale Check. A new exclusive house fabric inspired by the tailor’s rich archives and the 5th Earl of Lonsdale (1857–1944), who was known for his signature tweed suits. In collaboration with Standeven, the historic Yorkshire mill that wove the original cloth, Henry Poole & Co has faithfully recreated the design 113 years later. The updated version is a luxurious 11oz wool-cashmere blend that offers a modern portrayal of the Earl’s tweed.
Other Savile Row tailors will also join the celebration with their own wool-inspired creations:
clothsurgeon will display a His Majesty King Charles III–inspired bomber jacket, crafted from wool bunting originally displayed during the King’s Coronation in 2023.
Holland & Sherry will pay tribute to the journey of wool from fibre to fabric, with a focus on tweed. The house will also welcome back Welsh sheep breeders and hand-weavers for live demonstrations and workshops.
Gieves & Hawkes will feature a dedicated wool window, presenting an array of beautiful British wool products celebrating the versatility and beauty of the fibre. Inside the store, a spotlight will shine on the new Glenlyon range – a limited collection made using British wool woven in Scotland.
Anderson & Sheppard are focusing on their recently launched Off-Cut Tweed, which debuted at the beginning of the year. The cloth will be presented at the Farm Shop event on 16th October.
This anniversary not only celebrates 15 years of The Campaign for Wool but also reaffirms Savile Row’s commitment to craftsmanship, sustainability and British heritage. Together, the tailors of Savile Row continue to champion wool as a timeless, sustainable and beautifully versatile material that is as relevant today as it was a century ago.
